The PN government needs to show political will in the issue of drunk driving

We refer to the drunk driving incident that caused the death in Kuantan, as reported by the media on 26 May 2020. This is the second tragedy that have ended with the loss of life within the Movement Control Order period, after the death of the late Corporal Safwan Muhammad Ismail earlier this month.

The Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration through former transport minister Anthony Loke had already announced that the then government will amend the Road Transport Act 1987 to give harsher penalties for driving under the influence.

Among the amendments include lifetime suspension of their driver’s license. The Bill was scheduled to be tabled to Parliament this year. This shows that PH had the political will to handle this matter.

Unfortunately, we don’t see the same political will from the current PN administration. The drunk driving issue which was once a huge matter when Barisan Nasional (BN) and PAS were in the Opposition, no longer seems to be their priority once they have established a government. They only distributed an online survey by the Ministry of Transport and suggested the establishment of a Cabinet Special Committee when what should have been done is the amendment of existing laws.

Therefore, we urge the PN government to show political will in this issue by holding a Parliament sitting as soon as possible so that the amendment bill could be tabled and approved.
