DAP starts the Malaysia Dream rolling with Impian Sarawak

DAP has kicked off one of its most important endeavours in preparation for GE14 – our “Go Rural” projects in Sabah and Sarawak. We will start with Sarawak as the state election is in 2 years’ time. The project is called “Impian Sarawak”. We are looking for volunteers who are willing to travel with us to rural Sarawak and carry out projects that bring tangible benefits to the people.

Our first project is to build a gravity feed water system at Kampung Sait, which is a 40-minute drive (plus a 2-hour walk) from Kuching. The volunteers will join the villagers in building the water supply system together either during 28 Sept – 6 Oct (9 days) or 3 Oct – 6 Oct (4 days). As all of our funds will be allocated to running the project, volunteers will be required to pay for their own flights. On top of that, we will charge contribution fees of RM200 to cover volunteers’ transportation from Kuching, insurance, food and accommodation during their stay in Kampung Sait. The deadline for volunteers is 21 September 2013.

Note: Please note that we can only accept a limited number of volunteers due to logistical challenges and therefore not all applicants will be accepted.

KAMPUNG SAIT PROJECT: GRAVITIY FEED WATER SYSTEM

Remember the water shortage we had recently in the Klang Valley? Just a few days without running water caused havoc for many of us and made our lives difficult. By comparison, in many rural areas in Sarawak, running water is a luxury. If it doesn’t rain for 3 days, villagers will have to get their water supply from a nearby river, as well as bathe and wash their clothes in it.

Two years ago, the Government directed Kampung Sait relocate to higher ground to make way for Bengoh Dam, which would serve as a water reservoir to the nearest town. Ironically, it is this group of villagers who is most affected by the construction of Bengoh – they have no access to the running water provided by the dam!

Bengoh Dam cost about RM60 million to build and a gravity water feed system that will provide running water for every household in Kampung Sait only costs about RM25,000. This is pure injustice.

When asked whether water, electricity or roads was their highest priority, all the villagers in Kampung Sait said that running water was their dream.

So, together, let us make their dreams come true.

IMPIAN SARAWAK

For decades, Barisan Nasional has deprived the rural communities of their basic rights and habitually dishes out pre-election handouts in exchange for their votes. We vow to do things differently to bring about genuine change to their lives.

Under Impian Sarawak, we will provide basic infrastructure – roads, water and electricity. With basic facilities in place, the villagers can then focus on “Impian Sarawak” economic uplift projects such as cottage enterprises to earn stable incomes. At the same time, we’ll strive to educate the rural communities on their democratic rights as rightful Malaysian citizens.

In short, we want to return to the rural communities the dignity to choose the government they want – dignity that every citizen in a democratic country deserves. We believe that the winds of change are gathering momentum across rural Sarawak. That journey towards a brighter future starts now. Support “Impian Sarawak”. Join us today and be a part of this ground-breaking movement.
