Pakatan victorious in Kajang, one step closer to Putrajaya

With Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah’s win in the Kajang by-election last night, Pakatan Rakyat is one step closer to its goal of attaining Putrajaya.

The Pakatan Rakyat candidate obtained 16,741 votes to win by a majority of 5,379 votes, defeating her opponent Chew Mei Fun.

As a result of this win, the Selangor State Legislature adds another woman representative to its existing lineup boasting 14 women. This gives Selangor the distinction of having the most female representatives at 25 percent of its state legislature and 30 percent of its state EXCO leadership.

Selangor State Assembly Speaker Hannah Yeoh also created history by being the first Selangor State Speaker. She tweeted that Dr Wan Azizah would be sworn in as the Kajang State Assemblyperson on 7 April 2014.

When contacted, Hannah added that she is confident that the state would benefit from Wan Azizah’s experience as the opposition leader in the Malaysian Parliament.

Dr Wan Azizah was nominated as the Pakatan Rakyat candidate for the Kajang by-election after her husband Anwar Ibrahim, was sentenced to five years in prison in his “Sodomy 2” trial. Anwar, who is free on bail, has appealed the decision but the verdict disqualifies him from standing as a candidate in Kajang. -The Rocket
