“Is Shahidan Kassim calling for electoral apartheid?”

Dr Ong Kian Ming, DAP MP for Serdang has called for the resignation of Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim, following Shahidan’s statement in parliament today calling for a race-based voting system.

“What he is in fact advocating for is electoral apartheid. What he is saying is not only undemocratic, it is in fact unconstitutional,” said Ong.

Today Shahidan suggested that the race ratio of Ministers should be the same as the percentage of each race in the country, which according to him is 23 percent chinese, 8 percent Indian, and 67 percent Bumiputera.

The Arau MP had suggested this formula in reply to a question by DAP’s Seremban MP Anthony Loke on how the Elections Committee (EC) would reinforce the “one person, one vote” concept to prevent gerrymandering. The statement provoked an uproar by Pakatan MP’s.

Dr Ong pointed out that Shahidan is the minister in charge of the elections committee.

“If his thinking is of this sort, i do not have any confidence that he can make sure that the EC can perform impartial and fair delimitation exercises!” added the Serdang MP.

Dr Ong Kian Ming also said that Prime Minister Najib Razak should ask for the Arau MP’s resignation because his statement was not in line with the government’s One Malaysia concept that Barisan Nasional has been advocating. -The Rocket
