Dyana Sofya versus Mah Siew Keong for Teluk Intan seat

Dyana Sofya will be up against Mah Siew Keong in Teluk Intan on 31 May 2014. Both the candidates had sent in their papers at 9.05am today.

Teluk Intan Suruhanjaya Pilihanraya (SPR) Elections Director Ibrahim Haji Ahmad had announced the official candidates for the constituency at 10.25 am, making it a 2-way fight for the seat between DAP and Gerakan.

The contested seat has 25,310 Chinese,  23,301 Malay and 11,468 Indian voters which make up the 41.9 percent of Chinese, 38.6 percent of Malays and 19 percent of Indian voters respectively.

Mah Siew Keong, is the president of Gerakan and a two-term Teluk Intan MP who had lost the seat to DAP’s M. Manogaran in 2008 and the late Seah Leong Peng in 2013. In this outing, Mah Siew Keong will be up against 27 year old Dyana Sofya, a law graduate who is the Political Secretary of Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang.

“I have great respect for Mah Siew Keong; to beat him would be a great challenge”

“However, I am prepared,” she said today.

The seat was vacated due to the sudden loss of MP Seah Leong Peng, who had succumbed to cancer. He had previously won the seat in 2013 by a 7,313 majority, defeating the same Gerakan candidate. If DAP is successful in defending the seat with Dyana Sofya, the party can boast its first Malay woman MP. -The Rocket
