Anti-corruption efforts not extended to PDRM

DAP MPs have questioned the refusal of the Royal Malaysian Police to be subjected to the positioning of anti-graft personnel in the police force

Minister in the Prime Ministers’ Office Paul Low had said in Parliament that anti-graft officers were posted in all government agencies other than the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM).

According to Low, until March 6, 20 Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) officers were placed in various government agencies in an effort to eliminate corruption.

The above reply triggered criticism from Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng who asked,

“Are the police so powerful that no one can touch them other than the police themselves?,”

He also highlighted an effort by the  Royal Commission of Inquiry who had proposed to set up an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) to counter corruption in the police force, which was eventually rejected by the PDRM.

Lim also demanded that the MACC and the government explain if there is anyone who has the authority to investigate police corruption.

His call for an anti corruption agent in the PDRM was also joined by Ipoh Timur MP Thomas Su who said that the MACC needed to step in and clean up the image of the corrupt police  who have failed at reforming themselves in that respect.

Su also related the reports from Transparency International that indicated that the police force was viewed as one of the most corrupt agencies in 2013. – The Rocket
