{"id":9739,"date":"2014-08-04T16:27:17","date_gmt":"2014-08-04T08:27:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/?p=9739"},"modified":"2014-08-04T16:27:17","modified_gmt":"2014-08-04T08:27:17","slug":"ciq-would-increase-motorcyclist-fatalities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/ciq-would-increase-motorcyclist-fatalities\/","title":{"rendered":"CIQ would increase motorcyclist fatalities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/suki-650x400.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9741 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/suki-650x400.jpg\" alt=\"suki-650x400\" width=\"350\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a>Imposing 480 percent toll hike at the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex<\/span>\u00a0would increase motorcylist fatalities, said Wong Shu Qi, Johor State Assemblywoman for Senai in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>She said that thought the toll hike was a powerful deterrent tool to reduce congestion, it would force commuters to use motorcycles, which would elevate accident numbers.\u00a0CIQ will be charged on commuters regardless of nationality and vehicles excluding motorcyclists.<\/p>\n<p>Backing\u00a0her statement with statistics showing road fatalities in Johor that were largely from\u00a0motorcyclists,\u00a0she said that commuting alternatives need to be provided or improved so that people would not resort to using motorcycles.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9740\" style=\"width: 677px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/stats-johor-motorcycles.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9740\" class=\"wp-image-9740\" src=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/stats-johor-motorcycles.jpg\" alt=\"stats johor motorcycles\" width=\"667\" height=\"344\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9740\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Road Fatalities on road by category of vehicles (Johor)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;The figures provided by related department in replying my question in February 2014 prove that irresponsible government and reckless policy making would eventually cost lives,&#8221; she explained also that\u00a0Malaysian migrant workers in Singapore choose to drive because of the low quality of our first-mile and last-mile public transport connection and to avoid the risk of using a motorcycle.<\/p>\n<p>She said that the decision by the\u00a0BN government to charge all cars regardless of\u00a0nationality with a whopping 469% increase from RM 2.90 to RM 16.50, which she said is \u00a0&#8220;ridiculous and forces people to take risks&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The toll collection is at the CIQ centre, which forces commuters\u00a0who pass through\u00a0to pay whether or not they use the EDL (Eastern Dispersal Link) \u00a0highway to Singapore.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">&#8220;With greater Johor Bahru booming in the midst of Iskandar regional development, more and more people choose to live within and work cross-boundaries,&#8221; Wong\u00a0said that the authorities should try to draw people in to spend their income in the greater Johor Bahru\u00a0and not drive them away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Wong Shu Qi had recently pushed for\u00a0government expenditure in Johor to centre around the improvement of public transportation and infrastructure as a channel for the profits gained from the increase in toll charges.
