{"id":5861,"date":"2013-08-30T12:18:27","date_gmt":"2013-08-30T04:18:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/?p=5861"},"modified":"2013-08-30T12:18:27","modified_gmt":"2013-08-30T04:18:27","slug":"malaysian-dream","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/malaysian-dream\/","title":{"rendered":"Malaysian Dream"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Lim Kit Siang<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Martin-Luther-King-Jr-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5865\" style=\"padding-right: 10px;\" title=\"Martin Luther King Jr 1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Martin-Luther-King-Jr-1-231x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Martin-Luther-King-Jr-1-231x300.jpg 231w, https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Martin-Luther-King-Jr-1-134x175.jpg 134w, https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Martin-Luther-King-Jr-1.jpg 376w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/><\/a>On Wednesday, Americans commemorated the 50<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr\u2019s historic \u201cI have a dream\u201d speech made in Washington on August 28, 1963, which evoked the American Dream which envisioned an inclusive nation where justice and freedom are enjoyed equally by her citizens regardless of colour or creed.<\/p>\n<p>Although much progress have been achieved in the past five decades to achieve these goals in the United States,\u00a0\u00a0the American Dream is still very much a work-in-progress.<\/p>\n<p>On the occasion of our 56<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0National Day, it is my hope that\u00a0\u00a0all Malaysians can rally behind a Malaysian Dream to build a more united, democratic, free, just and prosperous nation for all Malaysian citizens so that Malaysia can stand tall in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Is this too much to hope for when in recent months, the language and\u00a0\u00a0politics of hatred, suspicion and distrust seemed to have taken dominion of public spaces whether in print or Internet, causing concerned Malaysians to be worried about the nation\u2019s future?<\/p>\n<p>Just as their divisions, setbacks and failures in the past five decades of American nation-building have not been allowed to hold back the onward march of the American Dream, Malaysians must not allow our own divisions, setbacks and failures to obstruct the achievement of the Malaysian Dream \u2013 which envisions a plural society where all her citizens are united as one people, rising above their ethnic, religious, cultural and linguistic differences as the common grounds binding them as one citizenship exceed the differences that divide them.<\/p>\n<p>I believe the overwhelming majority of Malaysians, regardless of race, religion or region, are patriotic citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of our racial, religious, linguistic, cultural and regional differences, we are one Malaysian people who owe undivided loyalty to the country, we share one motherland \u2013 Malaysia \u2013 and we must come together as one people to develop the greatness of the country which we are capable of,\u00a0\u00a0deriving from the best practices, values and traditions\u00a0\u00a0from the diverse races, religions and cultures which have made Malaysia their home.<\/p>\n<p>It is only on the back of the Malaysian Dream that Malaysia can achieve a tryst with Destiny to accomplish greatness in various fields of human endeavour and to become one the leading nations of the world.<\/p>\n<p>_____________________________________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p>Picture credits to allposters.com<\/p>\n<p>_____________________________________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Lim Kit Siang On Wednesday, Americans commemorated the 50th\u00a0anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr\u2019s historic \u201cI have a dream\u201d speech made in Washington on August 28, 1963, which evoked the American Dream which envisioned an inclusive nation where justice and freedom are enjoyed equally by her citizens regardless of colour or creed.
