\"\"<\/a>Not only was Subang Jaya State Assemblywoman Hannah Yeoh\u2019s attempt to register her newborn daughter\u2019s race as \u2018anak Malaysia\u2019 rejected by the National Registration Department, her bid to reject racial politics was insulted by the MCA.<\/p>\n

MCA mouthpiece The Star reported MCA Public Complaints Bureau advisor Datuk C.K. Lim as saying that the party \u201cregretted\u201d Yeoh\u2019s action in not putting the baby\u2019s ethnicity as that of her Indian husband, Ramachandran Muniandy.<\/p>\n

It also reported Indian NGOs as accusing Ramachandran of \u201cdemeaning Indians by not standing up for his right to decide the race of his child.\u201d<\/p>\n

In fact, the baby \u2013 Shay Adora Ram\u2019s race had been picked automatically by the NRD officer and not her parents. When Yeoh and Ramachandran were informed by NRD officers that the current system would not allow the registering of their firstborn as \u2018anak Malaysia\u2019, they opted to leave the column for \u2018race\u2019 blank.<\/p>\n

Ramachandran told The Rocket, \u201cthe other options of ‘Cina’ or ‘India’ provided to us were not acceptable to us as both are inaccurate for our child who is of mixed-parentage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Faced with a deadline to register their child\u2019s birth certificate, the couple had no choice but to accept what was pre-selected by the officer.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaking us choose between ‘Cina’ or ‘India’ is something which we will not allow ourselves to do,\u201d Ramachandran said.<\/p>\n

The government\u2019s recent discussion on the possibility of omitting the category of \u201cethnicity\u201d in all official forms has yet to bear any fruit. \"\"<\/a>Home Minister Hishamuddin Hussein maintained that the registration of anak Malaysia<\/em> as a child’s ethnicity or race would involve changes to the country’s laws and amendments to the Federal Constitution.<\/p>\n

He did not elaborate on any impediments to prevent such registration. In the absence of any reasonable explanation, it is a case of business as usual for BN\u2019s mentality of divide and conquer along racial lines.<\/p>\n

DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng pointed out that the NRD\u2019s actions once again nullifies 1Malaysia as an empty slogan. \u201cClearly BN is so racist that being a Malay first, Chinese first or Indian first is more important that being a Malaysia first\u201d.<\/p>\n
