{"id":3587,"date":"2013-01-21T13:30:47","date_gmt":"2013-01-21T05:30:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/?p=3587"},"modified":"2013-01-21T13:30:47","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T05:30:47","slug":"youths-against-lynas-public-hazards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/youths-against-lynas-public-hazards\/","title":{"rendered":"Youths against Lynas, public hazards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/IMG_2040.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3588\" style=\"padding-right: 20px;\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/IMG_2040-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/IMG_2040-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/IMG_2040-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/IMG_2040-262x175.jpg 262w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>KUALA LUMPUR \u2013 A group of young Malaysians went on a hunger strike for 100 hours \u2013 more than four days \u2013 up to New Year\u2019s Eve, in their cause to protest against the controversial Lynas rare earth plant in Gebeng, Pahang.<\/p>\n<p>The move reflected the continuous, rising dissatisfaction of the Malaysian civil society against the execution of the plant, sending the clarion call to the ruling regime to \u201cact, or get ready to be changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Calling themselves Malaysian Youths Against Public Hazards, members of the group \u2013 part of the persistent Himpunan Hijau coalition \u2013 encamped themselves at Dataran Merdeka beginning Thursday, last 27 December, for the hunger strike.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly 20 people succeeded in reaching the 100-hour target, while being joined by more than 200 participants lending the strikers support in the cause.<\/p>\n<p>On New Year\u2019s Day, the Himpunan Hijau movement proceeded to hold a six-hour car convoy to Gebeng, Pahang, where the Australian rare earth plant is situated. The participants began their journey by setting of from Kuala Lumpur at PAS\u2019s Taman Melewar headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>The convoy arrived in Gebeng by 5pm the same day, where evening activities continue from there to the Anti-Lynas Blockade Base Camp in Balok.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/IMG_2089.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3589 alignright\" style=\"padding-left: 20px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/IMG_2089-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/IMG_2089-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/IMG_2089-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/IMG_2089-262x175.jpg 262w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Activist Wong Tack, chairman of the Himpunan Hijau coalition said, \u201cIt is our struggle to bring down this corrupt regime and evict Lynas from Malaysia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are carrying out a campaign for 100 days to bring down Lynas and to bring down the dark forces behind the corrupt regime,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Wong insisted that the authorities are irresponsible for allowing \u201cviolations of law and procedures\u201d, further regretting the fact that \u201cthe regulators have turned into violators themselves\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Both groups \u2013 Malaysian Youths Against Public Hazards and Himpunan Hijau \u2013 are decidedly having the same aims. First of the aims is to seek withdrawal of the temporary operating licence that the government has issued to Lynas, and the second one is for the detailed environment impact assessment of the Lynas plant to be granted access for the public.<\/p>\n<p>According to Wong, Himpunan Hijau\u2019s objective was to send the direct and clear message to those in power that \u201cforeign corporate coloniser must be immediately evicted from this country\u201d and the \u201cdark forces behind them must be exposed and removed from position and power\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>These two events are part of the series of on-going protests held by Himpunan Hijau \u2013a increadingly strong coalition of NGOs, probably the most active and highly participated movement against environmental grievances Malaysia has witnessed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/IMG_2630.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3590\" style=\"padding-right: 20px;\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/IMG_2630-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/IMG_2630-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/IMG_2630-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/IMG_2630-262x175.jpg 262w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Himpunan Hijau has held rallies with notable successes in recent years, with the first one in Kuantan held in October 2011, participated by more than 5,000 concerned citizens whom regarded the plant as \u201cunsafe\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>As Himpunan Hijau held their second rally in February 2012, the number has swelled up to a staggering number of more than 25,000 participants \u2013 a milestone, a sign seen by many as \u201ca rising force that should not be ignored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In November last year, a protest march dubbed \u201cthe Green Walk\u201d took place from Kuantan to its final leg in Kuala Lumpur, where the marchers were joined and cheered by more than 10, 000 other protesters at Dataran Merdeka.<\/p>\n<p>The Sydney-based Lynas plant is touted to be the world\u2019s biggest rare earth plant outside China. \u2013 The Rocket.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KUALA LUMPUR \u2013 A group of young Malaysians went on a hunger strike for 100 hours \u2013 more than four days \u2013 up to New Year\u2019s Eve, in their cause to protest against the controversial Lynas rare earth plant in Gebeng, Pahang.
