The Government was able to do so because the Government holds the power to issue the “customs brokerage licence”. By 2022, without a 51% Bumi-equity, a freight forwarding company will not be issued the “customs brokerage licence and will have to close shop.

Many may think that such “robbery” or “free-riding” is only happening to those in the freight forwarding industry. The true fact is that, if it can happen to the freight forwarding companies, it can also happen to any industry, because in Malaysia, all kinds of trade and industry require one licence or another from the government authorities.

An importer or exporter requires licence to import and export issued by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. A housing developer requires licence from the Ministry of Housing. A retailer requires licence from the local government and also the LHDN. To sell fertilizer, one needs the licence from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer. To run a coffeeshop and food stall, one needs not only the licence from the local government, but also from the Ministry of Health.

MP for Stampin, Chong Chieng Jen.

On the face, such a policy may seem to advantage one race over the other races. In actual fact, such policy only facilitates the rich, the elites and the politically connected Bumiputras to benefit from the forced sales of the non-Bumi’s shares in those freight forwarding companies.

Common low or middle-income Bumiputra will not be able to benefit from such policy. On the contrary, with such policy, the most likely outcome of which would be the creation of “alibaba” mode of trade in the freight forwarding services (in other words, another layer of extra charges and rent seeking). This will not only slow down the freight forwarding services but increase the costs o such service which ultimately will be translated into price of goods. The average Bumiputras will be the majority of the consumers paying extra for the increased costs.

So far, in the face of such unfairness and unconstitutionality of the policy, all the GPS top guns including the SUPP President have been keeping quiet over it. Their silence and continued support for the PN Government amount to endorsing the implementation of such policy.

In light of such racially discriminatory policy of the PN Government, if GPS truly and sincerely subscribes to the principle of fairness to all races, the GPS should pull out of the PN Government, its ministers and deputy ministers should resign from their respective posts.

Media statement by MP for Stampin and DAP Sarawak Chairman, Chong Chieng Jen on 1 October 2021: If Abang Jo and GPS truly subscribe to the notion of multiracial and fairness to all races, then GPS should pull out from the Perikatan Nasional Government on the issue of “51% Bumi-equity for all freight forwarding […]

[260,274
816,2337,1038,129,120,2125,2187,441,2346,369,2126,422,15
post-24938","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-current","category-national","tag-abang-johari","tag-bumiputera-equity","tag-ccj","tag-chong-chieng-jen","tag-dap","tag-dap-sarawak-chairman","tag-federal-government","tag-gps","tag-gps-government","tag-malaysia","tag-mp-for-stampin","tag-perikatan-nasional","tag-sarawak
["GET
