{"id":2396,"date":"2012-07-25T10:41:51","date_gmt":"2012-07-25T02:41:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/?p=2396"},"modified":"2013-02-20T16:26:03","modified_gmt":"2013-02-20T08:26:03","slug":"hishammuddin-should-compensate-engineer-rendered-blind-by-bersih-teargas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/hishammuddin-should-compensate-engineer-rendered-blind-by-bersih-teargas\/","title":{"rendered":"Hishammuddin should compensate engineer rendered &#8220;blind&#8221; by Bersih teargas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>by Lim Kit Siang<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/asrul.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2397\" style=\"padding-right: 20px;\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/asrul-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/asrul-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/asrul-264x175.jpg 264w, https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/asrul.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Home Minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein should initiate action for the government to compensate mechanical engineer Asrul Wadi Ahmad, 27, for life as a token of personal responsibility, remorse and recompense for police violence and brutality in indiscriminately and wantonly firing tear-gas canisters \u00a0at participants of \u00a0the Bersih 3.0 rally in Kuala Lumpur on April 28, rendering Asrul \u201cclinically\u201d blind and unemployable.<\/p>\n<p>Asrul, who testified at the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) inquiry into violence at the Bersih rally, gave a most heart-rending account of his plight when he was hit by a tear gas canister during the Bersih 3.0 rally.<\/p>\n<p>Asrul had perfect 20\/20 vision prior to the injury but visibility in his right eye has now been reduced to 15 percent.\u00a0 As a result, he may become unemployable as a mechanical engineer though he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn in February.<\/p>\n<p>Asrul has consulted doctors from two private and three government hospitals and been told that the injury to his right eye cannot be reversed via medical procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Asrul recounted at the Suhakam inquiry his horrendous experience at the Bersih 3.0 rally.<\/p>\n<p>Moments before the incident, together with his father and younger brother, Asrul fled from the water feature at Jalan Tun Perak, adjacent to Dataran Merdeka.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;We ran from the location when the tear gas was fired, the three of us took refuge in Masjid Jamek.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A little while later we walked out of Masjid Jamek but because it was so crowded and chaotic, my brother and I were separated from our father.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That was when I hit by the canister and fell to the ground.
