{"id":14815,"date":"2020-07-15T10:58:57","date_gmt":"2020-07-15T02:58:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/?p=14815"},"modified":"2020-07-15T10:59:51","modified_gmt":"2020-07-15T02:59:51","slug":"in-a-show-of-solidarity-kor-ming-resigns-as-deputy-speaker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/in-a-show-of-solidarity-kor-ming-resigns-as-deputy-speaker\/","title":{"rendered":"In a show of solidarity, Kor Ming resigns as Deputy Speaker."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Nga Kor Ming has announced his resignation as Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat to stand in solidarity with former Speaker Tan Sri Ariff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/nga.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14816\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tan\nSri Ariff was removed as Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat through a motion brought by\nPrime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, a move which was strongly criticized by the\nopposition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cThis morning we have witnessed for the first\ntime in the history of Malaysia, a qualified Speaker being removed from his\npost for absolutely no reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Therefore,\nin full solidarity with Tan Sri Ariff and per my own principles &#8211; I will only\nserve the government elected by the people. Thus, I announce my resignation as\ndeputy speaker of the Dewan Rakyat immediately,&#8221; he said in a press\nconference in the Parliament lobby, today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"830\" height=\"553\" src=\"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Ariff-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14817\"\/><figcaption><strong><em>Former Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, Tan Sri Ariff was removed without explanation. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nvacant roles for speaker and deputy speaker were filled by the former Chairman of\nthe Election Commission, Azhar Harun and Pengerang Member of Parliament, Datuk\nSeri Azalina Othman Said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tan Sri Ariff stated that the act of a government\nremoving a Speaker is out of the ordinary and &nbsp;to his knowledge has never been performed in\nany other country with the exception of Trinidad and Tobago. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/FormerHouse-Speaker-of-Trinidad-and-tobago-Mrs-Occah-Seepaul.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14821\"\/><figcaption><strong><em>Trinidad&#8217;s former Speaker Occah Seepaul was removed by Prime Minister Paul Manning in 1995<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Trinidad removed their Speaker Occah Seepaul in 1995 and\nplaced her under house arrest following allegations of improper conduct. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He stressed that there has been no other examples in 800\nyears of a Speaker being removed before the parliamentary session was over. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nga Kor Ming has announced his resignation as Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat to stand in solidarity with former Speaker Tan Sri Ariff.
