{"id":14773,"date":"2020-07-14T16:07:48","date_gmt":"2020-07-14T08:07:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/?p=14773"},"modified":"2020-07-14T18:15:46","modified_gmt":"2020-07-14T10:15:46","slug":"dark-day-for-due-process","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/dark-day-for-due-process\/","title":{"rendered":"Dark Day for Due Process"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Indians have this saying: you only need to taste one grain of rice to check if the entire pot is cooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"836\" height=\"532\" src=\"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/rice.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14779\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Likewise Azhar Azizan Harun\u2019s first day performance as Parliament Speaker has set the tone for more disappointments in the coming days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"921\" height=\"539\" src=\"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Azhar.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14780\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For starters, how can a person not elected by the Dewan Rakyat claim himself to be a Speaker and take his oath of office?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secondly, why was the new appointment &nbsp;triggered when there was no vacancy in the office of the Speaker, either by dissolution of Parliament or otherwise?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And thirdly there was no 14-days notice given, to elect a Speaker, after Mohd Ariff Md Yusof was removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"830\" height=\"553\" src=\"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Ariff.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14783\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, the whole process was fundamentally flawed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a lawyer himself, Azhar should have known better. To be honest, refusing the appointment under such grave circumstances, is more in line with who he is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, he rattled off an unconvincing debut speech as the new Speaker, thanking lawmakers for appointing him. Maybe he was pacifying his conscience as the due process was sabotaged by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We didn\u2019t get to vote in the Speaker as we rightfully should. Instead, a backdoor government appointed a backdoor Speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"760\" height=\"425\" src=\"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/backdooor.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14813\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And in the process, silenced our voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a travesty of justice.
