Malaysia\u2019s Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin\nannounced a cabinet line-up early this week and unveiled a couple of surprises\nat the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, what are the surprises?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 #1 \u2013 No Deputy Prime\nMinister<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The PM revealed on last Monday that unlike previous versions\nof the Cabinet, Malaysia\u2019s brand new government will not have a deputy prime\nminister. Instead, Muhyiddin has appointed four senior ministers to assist him.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some may think that it is a good strategy by Muhyiddin which\nwill help to ensure his political survival. Maybe if he chooses a deputy from\nany of the Perikatan Nasional component parties would have opened him to\nunhappiness and criticism from within the coalition?  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

#2 \u2013 From 55 to 70 Cabinet members?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why did Muhyiddin decided to increase the numbers of cabinet\nmembers? Is it because of he needs to get a hold of as many MPs as possible\nlest they run away to another bloc?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By increasing the number of ministers and deputy ministers\nfrom East Malaysia, Muhyiddin was also ensuring better support from Sabah and\nSarawak. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we compared to the previous Pakatan Harapan\nadministration, they had four full ministers and three deputy ministers from\nEast Malaysia. Meanwhile, Muhyiddin\u2019s has six full ministers and eleven\ndeputies. Isn\u2019t it clear enough what is the game played by Muhyiddin?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, what is the similarity of Muhyiddin\u2019s cabinet and the\nold Barisan Nasional line-up?  Both are\nmuch larger than that of PH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#3 – \nNo youth                                  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those on the new Cabinet now seem to have an average age\nrange in the late 50s. Even the Youth and Sport Minister aged 47 years old? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In comparison, the previous cabinet\u2019s youngest minister,\nSyed Saddiq was just 25 when he was appointed for Youth and Sports. As a youth,\nI personally think that there is now a need for young politicians to step up\nbecause they are the one who must be able to understand the aspirations and\nconcerns of the youth of Malaysia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#4 \u2013 Lack of minorities<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, although Chinese and Indians together make up almost\n30 per cent of Malaysia\u2019s population, there is only one Chinese minister and\none Indian minister in the rest of the cabinet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In contrast, PH\u2019s previous cabinet was far more ethnically\ndiverse with five Chinese ministers and four Indian ministers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the new government focusing on more Malay-centric\npolicymaking?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malaysia is a complex country made up by many different\ngroups of people and races. Disregarding this fact could lead the new\ngovernment and the entire country to chaos once again, and eventually even\ndestruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In conclusion, what can people say about the new cabinet composition that was build after the successful of \u201cSheraton Move\u201d, was to ensure Muhyiddin\u2019s survival. The positions were created so that there would be enough seats to be divided among political parties in the coalition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
