PUTRAJAYA, AUG 6: Amidst the \u2018attacks\u2019 on the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC), who are probing the quagmire that is the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal, opposition leaders have vowed support for the beleaguered anti-graft body.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the MACC headquarters here this morning, some 20 opposition leaders including PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang, Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB) representatives Mohamad Sabu and Khalid Samad, and PKR secretary general Rafizi Ramli met briefly with a senior official from the MACC.<\/span><\/p>\n

The brief meeting was held with MACC Strategic Communications director Rohaizad Yaakob, who thanked the leaders and also the public for its support.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Lim who is also Gelang Patah MP called for an end to what he called “warfare” between the agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We should not carry out activities as if suspecting each other as traitors, MACC should be allowed to carry out its duties,” he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen MACC comes under attack, it can only undermine its professionalism and performance. We are not traitors, we are not committing treason and that\u2019s why we should stop \u2018warring\u2019 among ourselves and focus on fighting all swindling and corruption,\u201d he said. <\/span><\/p>\n

Two MACC officers were last week apprehended by an increasingly high-handed police force for purportedly \u2018leaking\u2019 documents pertaining to the former\u2019s probe into 1MDB. <\/span><\/p>\n

Yesterday, the MACC Special Operations Division was also raided by the police, the latest in the seemingly desperate moves linked to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, who is under scrutiny for the RM2.6 billion \u2018donations\u2019 he received from a mysterious donor into his personal accounts. <\/span><\/p>\n

GHB leader Mohamad Sabu, or Mat Sabu, said that he pledged support to the MACC so that it can truly be a independent body.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe do not want the continued perception that MACC has no power, especially against those at the very top,\u201d he said, adding that he urged all the harassment against MACC be stopped. <\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, when approached on the sidelines, Rafizi said the public should step up and lodge reports on the RM2.6 billion \u2018donation\u2019 to the MACC. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe original terms of reference, so to speak, for the MACC\u2019s investigation was that the donation traced back to SRC International, but now that the PM has claimed that it was from a donor, the onus on him is to prove that the donation was not corrupted in nature, nor exchanged for a favour. The MACC is empowered by the MACC act in this matter,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n
