{"id":12885,"date":"2015-05-05T20:03:04","date_gmt":"2015-05-05T12:03:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/?p=12885"},"modified":"2015-05-05T20:03:04","modified_gmt":"2015-05-05T12:03:04","slug":"malaysia-on-worrying-slide-down-the-human-rights-ladder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/malaysia-on-worrying-slide-down-the-human-rights-ladder\/","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia on worrying slide down the human rights ladder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/whos-afraid-of-the-big-bad-sedition-act\">Read previous report: Who&#8217;s afraid of the big bad Sedition Act?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">With the new amendments to the Sedition Act passed in Parliament last month, the criticism against the amendments have\u00a0unsurprisingly fallen on deaf ears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Despite having a poor human rights track record, the government showed no shame in the increasingly tense response to the amendments, including even from the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In a statement on the day the amendments were passed, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra\u2019ad Al Hussein said that the amendments seriously undermines freedom of expression and opinion.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12895\" style=\"width: 471px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/575932Rights_Commissioner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12895\" class=\" wp-image-12895\" src=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/575932Rights_Commissioner.jpg\" alt=\"Pic from UN.org\" width=\"461\" height=\"307\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12895\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pic from UN.org<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt is very disappointing that the Malaysian Government is now proposing to make a bad law worse,\u201d he said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThese proposals are particularly worrying given that the Sedition Act has been applied in many instances to curb the legitimate exercise of freedom of expression in Malaysia \u2013 including through the arrests of individuals for merely tweeting their criticism of Government policies and judicial decisions,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The UN also said that the UN Human Rights Office has long urged Malaysia to either repeal the 1948 Sedition Act or to bring it in line with international human rights standards, and recalled that the Malaysian government had committed to repealing the Act during its Universal Periodic Review at the Human Rights Council in 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In fact, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had promised to repeal the Act before, once in July 11, 2012 and another time in London on July 3, 2013. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Zeid said the passing of the equally as oppressive Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) further exarcebates the human rights shortcomings in the law. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSilencing dissent does not nurture social stability, but an open democratic space does,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cCurtailing the legitimate exercise of human rights in the name of fighting terrorism has been shown, time and again, to backfire and to only lead to festering discontent and a strong sense of injustice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A statement from Washington also noted that the Sedition Act restricts the freedom of expression in Malaysia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe welcome the decision to remove provisions outlawing criticism of the government and the judiciary, and we hope the Government of Malaysia will therefore reconsider recent sedition charges brought under those now-defunct sections of the law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Other aspects of the Sedition Act amendments, however, threaten to restrict unduly speech and public discourse.
