{"id":12328,"date":"2015-03-06T17:35:23","date_gmt":"2015-03-06T09:35:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/?p=12328"},"modified":"2015-03-06T17:35:23","modified_gmt":"2015-03-06T09:35:23","slug":"dap-mp-sued-over-1mdb-remarks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/dap-mp-sued-over-1mdb-remarks\/","title":{"rendered":"DAP MP sued over 1MDB remarks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In what is the latest addition to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak&#8217;s string of\u00a0lawsuits filed against news organisation, DAP MP Tony Pua has become the first individual the premier\u00a0is suing\u00a0for defamation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11629\" style=\"width: 386px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/tony-pua-1mbd_400_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11629\" class=\"wp-image-11629\" src=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/tony-pua-1mbd_400_1.jpg\" alt=\"tony-pua-1mbd_400_1\" width=\"376\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11629\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pua is being sued by Najib for defamation<\/p><\/div>\n<p>News portal MalaysiaKini reported that in a statement of claim it sighted recently,\u00a0Najib alleges that Pua\u00a0implied that Najib had stole or is going to continue to steal the peoples&#8217; money with regard to the controversial 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.malaysiakini.com\/news\/291151\">report<\/a>, the suit was filed with the registrar of the High Court in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, and the premier is represented by the law firm of Hafarizam, Wan Aisha and Mubarak.\u00a0Also named as a defendant in the suit is Chan Chee Kong, who owns the<em>Mediarakyat.net<\/em> portal on which the video was uploaded.<\/p>\n<p>The suit pertains\u00a0to a speech\u00a0\u00a0made by Pua\u00a0at a party fund-raising dinner last November, titled &#8220;Tony Pua: Najib is creating the biggest scandal ever in the history of Malaysia&#8221;, which shows Pua allegedly accusing Najib of stealing the people&#8217;s money with the 1MDB project.<\/p>\n<p>Najib in the claim said the speech made by Pua also implied\u00a0that he (Najib) is untrustworthy and unfit to hold public office.<\/p>\n<p>1MDB, which is a wholly-government owned investment arm, is mired in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/the-plot-thickens-in-1mdb-scandal\/\">controversy<\/a> not least because of its huge debts and dubious deals.<\/p>\n<p>According to the news portal, Najib&#8217;s lawyer Mohd Hafarizam Harun confirmed the suit had been filed but did not\u00a0provide details.<\/p>\n<p>It is reported that Najib is seeking\u00a0seeking exemplary, aggravated and general damages, as well as an injunction to stop the defendants from repeating, publishing such slanderous and libellous statements.
