{"id":11796,"date":"2015-01-19T15:48:36","date_gmt":"2015-01-19T07:48:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/?p=11796"},"modified":"2015-01-19T15:48:36","modified_gmt":"2015-01-19T07:48:36","slug":"malaysia-should-go-after-tigers-and-crocodiles-of-corruption-not-just-ikan-bilis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/malaysia-should-go-after-tigers-and-crocodiles-of-corruption-not-just-ikan-bilis\/","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia should go after &#8220;tigers&#8221; and &#8220;crocodiles&#8221; of corruption, not just &#8220;ikan bilis&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/lks-tunrazak.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-11800\" style=\"padding-left: 20px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.therocket.com.my\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/lks-tunrazak.jpg\" alt=\"lks tunrazak\" width=\"410\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a>Malaysia has only managed to catch \u201c<em>ikan bilis<\/em>\u201d (anchovies) in its last two decades of the fight against corruption, which means there must be an all-out war on corruption to jail the &#8220;big fish&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0statement today, DAP Parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang has asked the government to go after \u201ctigers\u201d and \u201ccrocodiles\u201d instead of just the \u201cikan bilis\u201d, or small fish, which is the term used to refer to small offenders, with regards to corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Lim\u00a0said this in relation to the upcoming revision to\u00a0 the 2015 National Budget, where he\u00a0asked the government to \u201cdeclare war\u201d on corruption, incompetence and extravagance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuch a campaign would save the Malaysian government and taxpayers billions of ringgit, which would help the country tide through the looming economic crisis as a result of the fall in\u00a0oil prices\u00a0and commodities, and the weakening of the Malaysian ringgit,\u201d Lim said.<\/p>\n<p>Taking a swipe at the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC), he said that it failed to catch the &#8216;big fish&#8217; in the last 34 years under the reign of the last three Prime Ministers, Dr Mahathir, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, and Najib Razak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalaysia lags seriously behind other countries in the battle against corruption, particularly Indonesia and China, and Malaysia is at risk of being overtaken by these two countries, which had occupied the bottom two of rungs of the Transparency International\u2019s Corruption Perception Index two decades ago, in a matter of a decade,\u201d he added, saying that MACC had little to show in terms of results despite its greatest investment in anti-corruption campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Malaysia is ranked ]\u00a050 in the CPI, ahead of countries such as Philippines (85), Thailand (85), Indonesia (107), Vietnam ranked (119) and Laos (145); but far away from the Federal Government&#8217;s pledge of achieving number 30.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia, for example, rose from a CPI score of 1.7 in 2000 to 3.4 in 2014 and in 2013\u00a0 arrested several high-profile individuals for corruption, including the\u00a0republic&#8217;s top judge, Akil Mochtar.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia, on the other hand, has been stagnant at the mid-point for the past decade, barely budging a point or two each year despite the increasing calls for tough action against corruption.<\/p>\n<p>The same success has not been seen here, as the highest-ranking individual to be accused\u00a0of cheating the government was former Transport Minister Tun Ling Liong Sik.
