Why build incinerator when government cannot manage waste stations?

Ong Kian Ming at stinkzoneSerdang MP Ong Kian Ming has expressed serious doubts regarding the ability of the government in managing waste, citing the pollution problems at the Taman Beringin Waste Transfer Station.

Ong Kian Ming, who visited the site at Kepong revealed shocking findings that showed pollutant levels that were way above the Department of Environment (DOE) standards. His data showed that the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) taken directly from the discharge coming out of the leachate plant was almost 4 times the DOE limit.

Also, another sample from Taman Nanyang Leachate discharge from former non-sanitary landfill showed Arsenic levels 7 times the DOE limit.

“I call for the DOE to investigate as to why the Taman Beringin WTS is allowed to flout DOE standards for its leachate discharge and to take strong action against those responsible for allowing these pollutants to be discharged into Sungai Batu,” Ong also demanded an explanation for the non operational leachate treatment plant in Taman Nanyang.

“How can residents be assured that the pollution standards will be effectively monitored for the proposed incinerator next-door?,” he asked, doubting proper management of the highly controversial kepong incinerator planned nearby the area.

The sample collections were done on 30 June 2014, where Ong had witnessed the collection of 4 water samples around the Waste Transfer Station (WTS) in Taman Beringin, Kepong. Tests were conducted by an accredited chemical laboratory. -TheRocket
