Muhyiddin must immediately stage a ‘whole of society’ war against Covid-19

Malaysia has become one of the world’s worst performing nations against Covid-19 since Muhyiddin declared a State of Emergency!

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Iskandar Puteri, Lim Kit Siang has called upon Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Yassin to acknowledge that the State of Emergency declared on 11 January 2021 has been nothing but a dismal failure. In fact, since the declaration, the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government has managed to regress Malaysia into becoming one of the world’s worst performing nations in the battle against the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a statement released yesterday, the veteran DAP leader shared several damning statistics regarding PN’s handling of the Covid-19 crisis, including:

  • Malaysia used to be ranked No. 85 with the most cumulative total Covid-19 cases on 18 November 2020.
  • However, we are projected to be ranked No. 36 in cumulative total Covid-19 cases by 28 June 2021.
  • Malaysia will also overtake China in total Covid-19 deaths by 28 June 2021.

Hence, Lim urged for PN to immediately allow Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies (DUNs) to reconvene as well as end the State of Emergency on 1 August 2021. This move is in line with the decree by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Conference of Rulers on 16 June 2021.

The Iskandar Puteri MP stressed,

“When will the Muhyiddin government set an example of a ‘war mentality’ by immediately convening Parliament and DUNs and end the Emergency on August 1 to set to stage for a ‘whole-of-society’ war mobilisation of the country against Covid-19 pandemic?”

Within the same statement, Lim also called out the lack of urgency by the PN government to implement the aforementioned requests by His Majesty Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Conference of Rulers. Since the statements were released by the Istana Negara, there have been zero indication that PN is calling for an emergency Cabinet meeting to discuss the matter.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister Office’s three-paragraph statement replying to His Majesty’s decree was deeply disappointing whereby Muhyiddin only ‘takes note’ but did not act when action is urgently called for.

In fact, Muhyiddin and his bloated Cabinet have shown zero sense of urgency nor any ‘war mentality’ against the scathing Covid-19 pandemic despite declaring a State of Emergency for almost half a year. It is time for this #KerajaanGagal to follow the requests of His Majesty Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Conference of Rulers to end ‘Darurat’ on 1 August 2021 and implement a ‘whole of society’ and ‘whole of government’ approach in the battle against Covid-19 by allowing Parliament and DUNs to reconvene as soon as possible. – The Rocket.
