Kinabatangan MP Bung Mokhtar Radin has apologized for his bizzare Hitler glorification after the German 7-1 thumping of Brazil in the World Cup semifinals early yesterday morning.

Instead of heartfelt regret, the Sabah Parliamentarian tweeted “Long live Bung” along with his apology.

“When Germany whacked Brazil, I unintentionally said something that hurt d feeling of d ppl in Germany.MY SINCEREST APPOLOGY (sic). LONG LIVE BUNG..” he tweeted.

Bung’s apology came minutes before Prime Minister Najib Razak tweeted his disapproval of the “unacceptable” pro-Hitler comment and said that the Kinabatangan MP would withdraw his comment.

“He does not speak for Malaysia, or for ordinary Malaysians who understand Europe’s tragic past, and respects its modern unity. This should be a time of celebration for Germany, and we wish them all the best in the finals,” said Najib.

While the controversial MP’s “long live Hitler” tweet was reported by BBC News, CNN, The Huffington Post, The Washington Post and other global media, Bung responded to the international spotlight by tweeting “i’m a world’s star now. problem?” at 9.04pm last night.

This invited more flak from angry netizens who criticised him for self-glorification, and said he did not address the insult on Germany. Malaysians online have expressed embarrassment at his post and questioned the sincerity of his apology.

User @kavilan expressed surprise that Bung could have made such a glaring tweet “unintentionally”. @syahrezan tweeted: “The pressure from the German government and businsss community must be great enough for the PM to have to step in in Bung’s case.”

User @orfeuss felt that Bung had only apologised because of the pressure, pointing out that when ordinary Malaysians criticised him, “he told us to basically buzz off.”

It appears that the MP has since erased all traces of his Hitler twitter trail, removing his apology along with the congratulatory tweet to the dead Nazi dictator.

However, twitter user and blogger @papagomo has kept the topic alive with his tweet,

“Long live kill ” along with a meme of the German fascist with the words “I don’t always kill people, but when I do, I prefer dos Jews.”
